Enhanced Inter-cell Interference Coordination for Heterogeneous Networks in LTE-Advanced: A Survey
نویسندگان
چکیده
Heterogeneous networks (het-nets) – comprising of conventional macrocell base stations overlaid with femtocells, picocells and wireless relays – offer cellular operators burgeoning traffic demands through cell-splitting gains obtained by bringing users closer to their access points. However, the often random and unplanned location of these access points can cause severe near-far problems, typically solved by coordinating base-station transmissions to minimize interference. Towards this direction, the 3 generation partnership project Long Term EvolutionAdvanced (3GPP-LTE or Rel-10) standard introduces time-domain inter-cell interference coordination (ICIC) for facilitating a seamless deployment of a het-net overlay. This article surveys the key features encompassing the physical layer, network layer and back-hauling aspects of time-domain ICIC in Rel-10.

Inter Cell Interference (ICI) still poses a real challenge that limits the Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing Access (OFDMA) system performance, especially for users located at the cell edge. A common Inter Cell Interference Coordination (ICIC) technique is interference avoidance in which the allocation of the various system resources (e.g., time, frequency, and power) to users is contr...

The increasing demand for mobile data traffic brings new challenges on cellular networks in terms of network capacity and increased data throughput. In order to fulfill these demands, Heterogeneous Networks (HetNets) has been considered as a promising solution. On the other hand, Inter-Cell Interference Coordination (ICIC) is a big challenge toward HetNet deployments; in particular users in edg...

The Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) has proposed enhanced Inter-Cell Interference Coordination (eICIC) for the Fourth Generation Cellular Network Standard of the Heterogeneous Networks (HetNets) in order to decrease Cross-Tier Interference. eICIC includes two schemes, Cell Range Expansion (CRE) and Almost Blank Subframe (ABS). The Fourth Cellular Network Standard LTE (Long Term Evol...

The Long Term Evolution (LTE) of the Third Generation Partnership project (3GPP) has recently been investigating new deployment options to deal with sudden increase in demand for mobile broadband services. These strategies are being included in the already frozen Release 10 and in the almost finished Release 11. The final aim is to provide a significant network performance leap especially in de...

Enhanced Inter-Cell Interference Coordination (eICIC) techniques are targeted to improve the system and cell-edge throughput of Heterogeneous Networks (HetNets) in LTE-Advanced systems. In order to protect pico UEs from the strong macro interference, the macro eNB can either stop data transmission or simply reduce the transmission power during certain subframes. In this paper, we investigate th...
